POULIOT NOT JUST A THROW IN
Adding a player such as Brad Boyes to the lineup will surely get an article or two written about it. What hasn't been talked about much is the acquisition of Marc-Antoine Pouliot, former scoring sensation of the Rimouski Oceanic.
Playing alongside someone such as Sidney Crosby can often lead people astray when it comes to recognition. The funny thing is that Pouliot was still able to make people take notice. It started early, after a so-so rookie season, Pouliot broke into the scene with an impressive 73 point campaign in 65 games. Scouts loved the way the youngster took charge and made himself accountable for his teams downfalls.
The next season, he started off hot, picking up 58 points in an injury shortened season in which he only played 42 games, but in his last season, Pouliot shone and his talents were apparent.
Alongside Crosby, Pouliot picked up 45 goals and 69 assists in 70 games for 114 points. Pouliot had become a key member on junior hockey's top line along with Dany Roussin. Rimouski ultimately lost in the Memorial Cup final but the team was undefeated after the Christmas holiday and Pouliot and company were a much talked about team.
"Adding this kid was key for the Stillman deal," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "Next season, our team graduates our top 3 centers (Carter, Reid and McLeod) and we needed someone to step up. When the opportunity came up to acquire this kid, I wanted him. Next year we will still return three excellent centers in Pouliot, Richards and Fraser. I like depth and I think Pouliot is the type of kid who can make a difference later on."
Although Pouliot goes to the Canes as an injured player, Carolina is confident he can contribute in the late stages of a playoff run.
"He has a lot of usable tools. He can score, he can pass and he is a competent two way guy out there. Carts will be going to camp for two of the final weeks and we need someone to step in and replace him. That will be Marc's opportunity to shine."
