Capitals Happy for Gelinas

The Washington Capitals were pleased to see former Capital Martin Gelinas signed by the New York Islanders recently. Washington bought out the contract of the 35-year-old to clear salary cap space for their free agent acquisitions.

Gelinas is a dynamic winger who can still light the lamp. His puckhandling skills are still strong at his advanced age and he's one of the most durable players in the league. Intensity and strength are not his strong suit, but he has a wealth of experience and strong leadership qualities to add to New York.

In 13 games last season, Gelinas scored three goals and added two assists for Washington. In Season 3 he recorded 16 goals and seven assists in 82 games. Neither season was particularly impressive numbers-wise, but he played an integral role in the development of young players Jonathan Cheecho, Frantisek Lukes, Patrick Marleau, Todd Warriner, and Dan Boyle.

Washington will miss ya Marty, but we're glad you found a new home.
