Junior Capitals Tie Blackhawks
The Washington Junior Capitals earned a 3-3 tie with the Chicago Junior Blackhawks on Day 105 to fall four points out of the playoffs. The Caps are now 22-25-6 for the season.
Chicago jumped out to an early lead after Puncochar scored an unassisted goal on the power play at 1:56. Igor Shadulov was in the box for roughing at the time of the goal. The Blackhawks made it 2-0 just less than six minutes later when Malmivaara netted from Michalek and Luchkin at 7:46. With the team needing a spark, Shadulov dropped the gloves with Chicago's Malmivaara and paid the price. Malmivaara beat up Shadulov in the bout, but the fisticuffs seemed to do the trick. Sean Kotary scored his 15th of the season on the power play from Patrick O'Sullivan and Jakub Cutta at 17:27.
Washington pulled even early in the second period with another power play goal. Zbynek Novak was the scorer from O'Sullivan and Maxim Orlov at 4:12. The Capitals pulled ahead with its third power play goal in the later stages of the period. This time it was Cory Urquhart lighting the lamp from Branko Radivojevic and Novak at 14:24. After Washington surged into the lead, a second fight for Shadulov turned the game back in Chicago's favor. This time the Caps' pugilist fought Chicago's Taylor to a draw at 15:28, and just more than 90 seconds later the Blackhawks tied the game. Zeiler got the goal for Chicago from Wennerberg and Martin. Even worse for Washington, the goal came while the Caps were on the power play.
Neither team managed a goal in the final period or overtime as both goalies made a flurry of saves. Brad Topping stopped 36 shots for Washington, while Cam Ward had 35 saves for Chicago.
The Junior Capitals return to home ice against Florida on Day 107.
