CANES SIGN BIG INSURANCE POLICY

Carolina

With the playoffs looming and a top 6 defence which has been through a long and difficult season, the Carolina Hurricanes signed an unrestricted free agent. Brad Ference, the rather large 26 year old defenseman was locked up for 4 years and gives the Canes that depth guy they could utilize down the stretch.

"Brad is a big guy and a warrior," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "He has an offensive side to him but he really will assert himself physically, and as we approach the playoffs, his presence on the backend could help us not get bullied."

Ference, who stand six foot three, has a reputation for being a mean defender and an aggressive body checker. The Canes will likely split up their second pairing of Jeff Woywitka and Carloa Colaiacovo for the time being, to distribute the right handed shots on the team.

"Carlo will play with Eminger, which he did in junior a couple years ago. We like the option of Woywitka and Ference. It should make for an uncomfortable game for whoever they match up against."

Carolina take son the Flyers tomorrow in what could be a playoff matchup in a week or so.
