OFFENSIVE WINGER MIRNOV JOINS CANES IN PLAYOFF RUN
Carolina
A big trade left the Carolina Hurricanes pro squad seemingly weaker in the Tucker deal, but the junior Canes are the ones reaping the benefits.
Speedy left winger Igor Mirnov, a former Carolina draft pick, has found his way back to the organization, complete with a couple seasons of camps and a new dynamic look and feel.
Mirnov, 20, has 50 points in 50 games and sits with 25 goals, putting him fifth on the team in scoring. Considering he has missed 24 games, the impact of Mirnov may be immediate.
"He is a game breaker," “said head coach Craig Hartsburg. "Guys like him can turn on the jets and make other teams make mistakes. He has exceptional wheels and a deadly accurate shot. He makes our team that much more dangerous on every shift."
Mirnov is likely to join captain Brandon Reid and Canes top scorer Junior Lessard on the new number 1 line. The move allows Jeff Carter to center long time friend Ryan Getzlaf and speedy winger Jeff Tambellini on the second unit.
"The options we have for our lines now will make a lot of teams struggle against us. We need that extra depth because realistically, the playoffs are a different monster. Anything can happen."
Fans of the Canes might have been sad to see their fan favourite go, but the future for both the Canes and Igor Mirnov seems to be bright.
