Boughner Burns Oilers
The Oilers lost their series opener in a barn burner that left Bob Boughner holding the matches outside of the the Oilers burning dressing room.
The Oilers played a great game versus the number one seeded Predators but lost 3-2 in a game that can only be blamed on stupid penalties.
The first period was probably the most boring of all of the opening series last night. With a combined total of 8 shots, the only thing to highlight there was the Charging penalty by Thorton early on that seemed to begin to fuel Boughner's fire as he retaliated later with a vicious elbow, but only received a 2 minute minor. That was only a sign of things to come.
Period 2 started the same way that Period 1 ended; a vicious Boughner elbow. This time though, Boughner wouldn't be the only one to pay. Thorton notched a Powerplay beauty to give the Preds a 1-0 lead. After the goal, Thorton skated past the penalty box and waved at Boughner. Yikes!
After a reaming in the dressing room, the Oilers hit the ice again running, but dumb Boughner and his temper would cost the Oilers yet again. 3 Minutes into the 3rd, Boughner wound up and nailed Thorton in the face with a deadly highstick and received a 4 minute penalty for his actions. Thorton simply laughed, got stitched up and hit the ice for the Powerplay. But it was Pronger who would notch his 1st of the playoffs to give the Preds a 2-0 lead, which they would never look back from.
Despite goals from Yachmenev and Smith, the Oilers lost on another Powerplay goal by Pronger. That's right, all 3 Nashville goals were on the PP last night.
With GM Kyle unavailable for comment this morning, this reporter was left wondering what the Oilers will do to increase discipline in the playoffs? It's almost as if the team didn't realise the importance of this game. With Boughner unable to control his personal emotions, this team is in big trouble. However, since the Oilers won the 5 on 5 battle, it should be obvious that if they can stay out of the box, they can beat these pesky Preds.
