Capitals Frozen by Avalanche
Mikael Renberg scored two goals and assisted on a third, but it wasn't enough for the Washington Capitals as the Colorado Avalanche skated to a 4-3 victory on Day 66. The loss drops Washington to 12-16-3 for the season.
After both teams failed to score on a pair of power plays each, Renberg opened the scoring at 15:52. The goal, his 10th of the season, was assisted by Radoslav Suchy and Greg Watson.
The Capitals made it 2-0 early in the second period when Renberg netted his second of the game from Anson Carter at 2:25, but after the goal, Colorado turned on the offense. Isbister got a goal back for the Avs from Reinprecht and Pettinger at 9:49, before Forbserg tied it up with his 19th of the season from Kobesaw and Vrbata. Washington had two more power play chances in the second period but failed to score.
Washington finally got back on the board in the opening stages of the final period. Jonathan Cheechoo got the goal with the extra man from Carter and Renberg at 1:59. The Caps had two more power play opportunities after the goal, but failed to add to the lead. The missed chances would prove costly as Colorado tied the game at 18:30 through Reinprect from Pettinger and Isbister. Beech then netted from Svatos with just three seconds remaining to secure the win.
Manny Legace stopped 29 shots in the loss to fall to 10-14-2. Manny Fernandez made 25 saves in the win for the Avalanche.
