TROUBLE IN CANELAND?
Carolina
A scuffle or sorts has sent a wave through the local media. Are Shane Doan and Alexei Kovalev having issues with one another?
Doan, the second year captain of the Carolina Hurricanes apparently had a heated discussion with Kovalev on the ice. Sources suggest it was veteran Kris Draper who was able to sort it out, but in the end, many seem a bit worried about the failing relationship of these two team mates.
"I guess it doesn't look good when your captain and your best player have it out on the ice," said tough guy Scott Parker. "They are both big boys and I think each of them has a lot of pride. I won’t say what it was about but I think each of them has a side worth fighting, at least in their own eyes."
Sources suggest the often lazy play of Alexei Kovalev has started to cause a bit of a stir in the dressing room. Kovalev, generally considered by many as the offensive catalyst of the club, has looked to be less than committed to the defensive side of the puck, an aspect of the game that Doan takes pride in.
"Defense is a team game," said Jay McKee, the clubs top shut down defender. "When everyone does what they should be doing, it is a lot easier. Not tossing any names out there, but some guys need to show they at least give a damn."
The explosive line of Cory Stillman, Mike Fisher and Alexei Kovalev has done a number on the opposition offensively, but Kovalev in particular, sits at a mere +1. Fisher, regarded as the teams top 2 way winger, sits at +4 on the line and has generally looked like the only guy playing both ends on many nights. For a team who hasn’t lost in 16 games, those sort of numbers for a top line are not acceptable. The second line has been +15 in that same time frame.
"I think a lot of guys understand that we are winning a lot of game right now and maybe some people figure whatever is working, stick with it," said McKee. "Personally, I don't dig a guy hanging out at the blueline waiting for a pass while I'm out there digging and battling, but that's just me. Ehh, what do I care though. We move on to the next game and let everyone else do the talking."
The Canes have tonight off, a time for potential internal healing, but the question remains. Are the Canes in trouble?
