Junior Capitals Clip Coyotes in Overtime

Gennady Stolyarov scored at 1:43 of overtime and assisted on another goal to lead the Washington Junior Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Junior Coyotes on Day 42. The two points moves Washington to 7-12-1 for the season.

Phoenix opened the scoring at 7:17 of the first period on a power play goal by Ruggeri from Polaski and Metcalfe. The goal was Ruggeri's first of the season. After three failed Washington power plays, the Coyotes exteneded the lead to 2-0 with an even strength goal from Sundin. Ruggeri and Lambert assisted on the goal which came with just 19 seconds remaining in the period.

After a scoreless second period, the Capitals got on the board early in the third to rejuvenate the home crowd. Sean Bergenheim was the scorer from Ivan Baranka and Stolyarov at 1:06. After killing a penalty to Jakub Cutta 1:42 after the goal, the Capitals tied the game. Igor Shadulov was the scorer from Lance Moynch at 10:36. Despite a number of shots and scoring chances by both teams, the game went to overtime tied 2-2.

Washington quickly gained the advantage in the extra period as the Coyotes took two penalties in the first 1:13. Jaspers went for boarding at 0:29, and Tukio took a cross-checking minor and game misconduct 44 seconds later. With a two-man advantage, the Capitals wasted little time, and Stolyarov got the winning goal from Cory Urquhart at 1:43.

Brad Topping made 28 saves to earn the victory, his fifth of the season. Steve Belanger stopped 28 shots for Phoenix.

The Junior Capitals are back in action on Day 45 against Colorado.
