Junior Capitals Scorched by Flames
The Washington Junior Capitals scored a single goal to lose its third straight game on Day 39 in a 4-1 setback to the Calgary Junior Flames. Washington is now 6-12-1 for the season.
Calgary got off to great start, scoring just six seconds into the game. Moss was the scorer from Tvrdon and Vanbuskirk. Washington had three power plays in the period, and outshot the Flames 8-5, but the Caps were not able to score and it would come back to haunt them.
Greg Mauldin dropped the gloves and fought Calgary's King to a draw early in the second, and the fight lifted Washington's spirits. The Capitals took advantage of this momentum and tied the game at 3:13 when Jean-Claude Sawyer scored from Cory Urquhart and Fabien Laniel. Neither team managed to score for the rest of the period despite five penalties, four of them to Washington.
The Flames regained the lead after 4:32 of the third period on Tvrdon's goal from Vanbuskirk and Stayzer. Just under nine minutes later, Calgary made it 3-1 on the power play. With Jakub Cutta in the box for hooking, Taratukhin netted from Blanar and Minakov at 13:01. Four minutes later the Flames took advantage of another power play chance to close out the scoring. This time Mikhail Kuleshov and Sawyer were in the box giving Calgary a five-on-three advantage. Taratukhin capitalize on the two-man edge to score his second of the game and ninth of the season from Blanar at 17:08.
Brad Topping stopped just 24 shots in a losing effort for Washington. Levente Szuper made 26 saves to lead the Flames to the victory.
The Junior Capitals return to action on Day 42 against Phoenix.
