CANES CAPITALIZE ON TWO POINTS IN WASHINGTON, UNDEFEATED IN 14
Carolina
With the streak of 13 game in a row without a single loss, the Carolina Hurricanes strolled into Washington with a win on the mind. The Capitals, who were big spenders in the off season, had built up a pretty competitive team and had already played the Hurricanes tough. But would it be enough?
"We had to show up and play better at the start than last game," said captain Shane Doan. "The Wellwood line stepped up and drove home a lead early on and we really never looked back."
A minute and 19 seconds in, Jeff Friesen smoked his team leading 14th goal of the season on assists from Carolo Colaiacovo and Darcy Tucker. 8 minutes later, it was the same line to beat Manny Legace again as Darcy Tucker tallied his 5th from Caolaiacovo and Kyle Wellwood.
"That was the start we have needed for a while," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "We have had to come back several times and it was nice to actually start off a game with a lead for once."
Washington cut the lead in half mid way through the second as John Cheechoo scored to make it 2-1. Kris Draper added a goal to restore the two goal lead mid way through the third. Cheechoo would add his second goal of the contest, but the Canes would hold on to a 3-2 victory and increase their undefeated streak to 14.
"Ride it while you are on it," said defenseman Jay McKee. "That's the new rule for the Carolina Hurricanes."
