Panthers Douse Flames In 5-3 Victory

CALGARY

Florida got back in the win column with good third period to douse the Flames and hand them their 6th straight loss.

The Panthers got on the board just over a minute into the contest at 1:05 when Sean Hill beat Mikka Kiprusoff with a nice top shelf shot. The Flames tied the game when Ilya Kovalchuk put his 6th goal of the season past Roberto Loungo at 12:11. The Panthers then scored two goals just :36 seconds apart. The first was at 14:16 when Owen Nolan notched his 12th of the year and then Nolan assisted on Mike Rathje goal at 14:50 to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The second period belong to the Flames. They out shot the Panthers 13-7 and shut down the Panthers offense. Tuomo Ruutu scored a power play marker at 5:50 to cut the lead to 3-2. Calgary then tied the game at 3 late in the period (17:35) when Chuck Kobesaw scored his 2nd goal of the season. The Flames were on the comeback trail and the fans were loud and boisterous as they cheered their team on in hopes of completing the comeback and ending their 5 game losing streak.

BUT

As the second period belonged to the Flames the third belonged to the Panthers. The third was almost identical to the second except for the team. It was the Panthers out shooting the Flames 12-7 and scoring the goals. Stephen Weiss scored the eventual game winner at 10:39 and Ivan Novoseltsev scored an insurance goal and his 14th of the year at 12:14 to end the Panthers skid at 2 games and put them back in the win column with a 5-3 victory.
