Capitals Skate to Tie With Red Wings
Todd Warriner scored a brace and assisted on a third goal to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-4 tie with the Detroit Red Wings on Day 35. Washington moves to 7-7-3 for the season with the tie.
The Capitals jumped out to a 1-0 lead after just 58 seconds when Mark Eaton scored from Zigmund Palffy and Todd Warriner. Detroit struck back, however, just seven seconds after a power play expired to tie the game. Kunitz was the scorer from Kuznetsov and Zidlicky at 8:00. Washington killed off another penalty later in the period when Michal Rozsival went to the box for charging.
Detroit came out flying in the second period, and after just nine seconds it was 2-1. Hlavac scored the goal from Goc and Grigorenko. The Capitals went on the power play just 1:37 after Hlavac's goal, but Washington was burned by Hlavac again when he scored a shorthanded goal from Schultz and Goc at 3:20 to make it 3-1. The Caps finally started to turn this around midway through the second, and Bryan Berard got them within a goal at 11:49 when he scored from Anson Carter and Mikael Renberg. Washington had to go shorthanded again at 13:56 as Sarich went off for roughing, but the penalty kill unit did the job and kept the Wings off the board. With a boost in momentum from the successful kill, the Caps took it to Detroit, and Warriner tied the game at 3-3 when he netted from Palffy and Chubarov at 17:00.
Washington kept it going early in the third preiod, and Warriner's second of the game at 5:33 gave the Caps a 4-3 lead. Andrew Ference and Chubarov assisted on the goal. The Capitals held the lead until late in the game when Zidlicky tied it up for the Red Wings on the power play. Fedorov and Langenbrunner earned the assists while Sarich was in the box for hooking.
Peter Skudra made 34 saves for the Capitals, while Steve Shields stopped 22 shots for Detroit.
Washington returns to action on Day 37 in Dallas against the Stars.
