CANES PROVE TOO MUCH FOR SABRES IN REMATCH, CANES UNDEFEATED IN 13

Carolina

24 seconds in and the Simon Gagne buried his 10th of the season. Was this the actual start of the game? Were the Canes ready to play? Could this be the first Carolina loss in 13 games?

Just over four minutes later, the Canes newest acquisition Darcy Tucker received a pass from defensive stud Kris Draper and roofed a shot blocker side on Sabres netminder Marc Denis. Shane Doan did the dirty work and was able to free up the puck from a Sabres defenseman. The momentum shifted in the Canes favour, but would they be able to capitalize?

"We started off as bad as we have in some time," said Joel Quenneville. "I don't know if I can call it nerves, or nervousness or just the guys not being ready but Gagne broke in by himself and I haven't seen that sort of thing in months now."

With time winding down in the third, the momentum line of Parker, Tim Brent and Alexei Kovalev hit the ice and drove the Sabres deep into their zone. After a lot of cycling by Brent and Parker, the puck was fired back to the point where Oleg Tverdovsky unloaded a rocket that beat a screened Denis and the Canes took the lead.

Midway through the second, it was again the Momentum Line that took the Sabres by the horn. Jay Mckee sent the puck to the corner where Tim Brent was able to hold it in the zone and cycle it back out to Scott Parker who was standing in front of the net and banged in his 3rd of the season and took a two goal lead.

Carolina surrendered a power play goal mid way through the third but the Canes held on to win the contest and keep their undefeated streak of thirteen games in tact.

"It was a solid effort after the Gagne goal," said Doan. "We needed to show we could come back, and we did."

Canes are off today.
