JUNIOR CANES DAZZLE STARS
Carolina
With multiple point games from various Hurricanes, the young squad defeated the Dallas Stars by a score of 5-3. The Canes power play clicked on its only opportunity and the goaltending of Rob Zepp was enough to win the game.
"We have our entire lineup back now," said head coach Craig Hartsburg. "We are dealing with the injury to Karlsson but in general we have our four lines back on track, our defense is playing some strong hockey and our special teams give us a chance to win every night."
The Canes set the tone instantly as the tiny but explosive winger Sergei Mozyakin drove hard to the net and popped in his 9th of the season. Jeff Carter and Tomas Mojzis each collected an assist in the effort. The Stars battled back to bury two of their own before Ryan Getzlaf, on the Canes only power play chance of the contest, rifled a one time blast past Star goaltender Jason Bacashihua off of a pretty feed from captain Brandon Reid. Nigel Dawes also assisted on the goal.
"Dawes was really working out there," said the coach, "and I really had a feeling he was going to contribute today."
Dawes did not let down his coach as late in the second, the diminutive forward notched his 6th unassisted to put the Canes ahead.
Dallas responded early in the third to tie up the contest, but then playmaking defender David Cornacchia set up Andrew Peters and Junior Lessard to help seal the victory.
"Our depth was key today," said Reid. "We pretty much hit the Stars with waves and eventually they had to crack. I do not think there is any single line that a team can get away with covering and expect to win."
The Canes do not play on Tuesday and will likely spend the time off recovering from a flu bug that has sapped the strength of apparently half the team.
