BRUINS, MATT WALKER, BITCHLSLAPPED ON HOME ICE BY CANES
Carolina
In an electric atmosphere, the Boston Bruins and the Carolina Hurricanes met for what was setting up to be a dandy. The Bruins GM had stated that Matt Walker, trade bait extrodianire would be in the lineup and hyped up the chance to see the pathetic defenseman play. But only one stat was needed to see the impact of the rugged defender.
Matt Walker -4.
Indeed, the Canes pounded the terrible Dman 4 times and the line of Kyle Wellwood, Jeff Friesen and Darcy Tucker embarrassed the kid in front of adoring fans. Walker fought tough guy Marian Cisar to a draw and other than that fight, had no positive impact at all.
"The line put up a collective 8 points in the contest," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "I'd say they had a good night. I was asked if Walker being in the lineup made me change any plans. The answer is yes. Any time you can target a less than average player like Walker, you do. I guess a lesson is learned here. If they aren't ready, don't play them."
When asked if this poor performance lessened Matt Walker's worth, Quenneville laughed "well, I doubt his worth can get any lower but for us, he might be good to have around. Seems him being on the ice gives us a ton of confidence."
In another altercation, Jay McKee pounded Bruins defenseman Sean Brown for a clear victory. After the fight, Brown had a mini-tantrum on the ice and league officials have informed the rest of the league that Brown will be suspended 2 additional games for his tantrum.
"It was a good game for us," said captain Shane Doan. "Whenever we score 6, we tend to win. The Bruins brought little to the table tonight other than a lot of hype. We can deal with hype, especially when there is nothing to substantiate it."
The Canes hope to continue the current roll there are on and remain in second in the conference.
