CANES TAKES DOWN FLYERS IN OVERTIME
Carolina
Newly acquired Brad Ference did not take long to showcase what he can bring to the club. The powerful Ference watched young Brad Boyes get levelled by an open ice hit by Olli Jokinen and went after the talented Finn. Big Ference also added a key assist as the Canes won the game 5-4 in overtime.
"He did not get a nod for a star of the game, but he got one from me," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "He stood up for one of our kids and he played hard nosed hockey. That is what I want from our back end. It is what I expect. I think Brad is a perfect fit for our club at this time."
A righted handed shot, Ference has given the team the option to move Carlo Colaiacovo with Steve Eminger, a more defensively committed player. The move allows each pairing to have a puck mover or quality passer with an aggressive defensive stalwart. The Canes like the looks of their top 7 going in the playoffs.
"Brad gave us that extra option for toughness down the stretch. Brendan Bell is currently sitting but he could easily get back in if one of the 6 decides to not hold up their end. I do not might switching anything around. Winning is the only thing I worry about, not players feelings."
The Canes have tonight off, but remaining games with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia could still determine playoff position.
