Rangers Push Hurricanes to Brink
Lemieux, Bure break free from Carolina checkers.
The New York Rangers head back to Madison Square Gardens tonight with a chance to ice the series against the Hurricanes thanks to a magnificent performance by the ageless Mario Lemieux and the heretofore dormant sniper Pavel Bure.
After being hooked, hassled, and held in check for 3 games the #1 unit finally broke out. Lemieux dominated with points on all three goals, 6 shots on net and a plus three rating. Pavel Bure's speed gave the 'Cane's fits and he scored on 2 of his 3 shots while Mats Sundin added an assist and managed 4 shots of his own. The triumverate accounted for 13 of their teams 26 shots while propelling their team towards victory.
The highlight of the night was the go ahead goal which started deep in the Rangers end. Mathew Spiller moved the puck up to Wade Redden on the upper left boards and he blasted down the ice with Lemieux on his left and Bure on the far side. Redden gained the zone then passed it to Lemieux and who drew the defenceman and goalie towards him then fired an almost impossible pass to a streaking Bure. Bure one timed it into the net with little difficulty.

"We're happy with the win," said Mats Sundin after the game. "We need one more and neither of the last two wins has been at all easy. We're going to have to play our best game of the season next game in order to finish this thing. "
