CANES FIGHT TO SHUTOUT WIN
A slow start in Carolina led to a team meeting with players only. Several players were called out by one another, including former MVP and playoff MVP winner Martin Brodeur.
The result?
How about a 1-0 shutout, overtime victory for the veteran netminder and a sigh of relief from his current Hurricane team mates?
"We needed a big game and we wanted to shut down the Wings offensively," said captain Shane Doan, a player instrumental in the games only goal providing a screen. "Martin is not a guy who likes to be called out and he responded as we figured he would. He was fantastic tonight."
The Canes also receives a huge impact game from defenseman Ilja Nikulin, the rugged defender, who laid out 7 punishing checks during 22 minutes of ice time. Nikulin, acquired in a deal that sent fellow defenseman Brendan Bell to Atlanta, has finally shown the type of defensive force the club knew he was capable of.
The Canes battled all game, were able to kill off 6 power plays, and finally were able to break the shutout in overtime thanks Kris Draper, who's shot from the top of the left circle found the twine.
"It should be a momentum game for us," said Draper, who notched his second goal of the year. "We were in this game from the start but we could not seem to find that connection to finish them off. I was lucky that Doaner was in front, otherwise this one might have ended in a zero zero tie."
