Junior Capitals Drop Opener
Brad Topping made 27 saves, but it wasn't enough for the Washington Junior Capitals in its season opener on Day 2. The New York Junior Islanders scored the only goal of the game in the second period to secure the win and improve to 1-1 for the season.
After a scoreless opening period that saw Washington's Igor Shadulov beat up New York's Brunelle, Guerin made it 1-0 from Rullier and Kadeykin on the power play at 1:43 of the second period. Igor Shadulov dropped the gloves again midway through the 20 minutes, but this time the result was a draw and an ejection.
Neither team managed to score in the final period, but the crowd was entertained with another round of fighting. This time it was Patrick O'Sullivan getting beat up by the Isles' Clouthier.
Shane Bendera stopped all 31 shots he faced to earn the shutout for New York.
Washington is off on Day 3 before visitint Toronto on Day 4.
