Senators Tie Canadiens in Opener

The Ottawa Senators FINALLY opened their season last night against the pesky Montreal Canadiens. In what was a great shooting, high-flying game, the Senators just couldn't put it away!

Alexei Kovalev started the season with a bang as expected. He scored just 20 seconds into the game to give the Sens an early 1-0 lead. Then Selanne scored, assisted by Kovalev, to close out the 1st with Ottawa leading 2-0. Osgood stopped all 10 shots.

The Senators dominated the 2nd period outshooting the Canadiens 14-5. However, Brent Johnson definitely stepped up keeping the Sens to just one lone goal scored by Ryder to retain the 2 goal lead for Ottawa after a weak Montreal goal.

The third period saw newly acquired goaltender, Chris Osgood fall apart. The Sens scored 1st on a goal by Novak 7 minutes into the period to give Ottawa a commanding 4-1 lead with just 13 minutes to go. But Ozzy fell apart. Montreal scored 2 goals in 2 minutes to get back into the game and gain some momentum. Then, with just over 1 minute to go Keefe got his 2nd of the year to tie it up. Overtime settled nothing as the Sens couldn't even manage a shot on goal.

After the game, Schmucky didn't have much to say, "It's frustrating when you see your offence come together like that but your Goaltender lets you down. Hopefully this was just a glitch and we don't see it become habit."

The Senators are off to Dallas to play their second game of the season tonight and hope for much better results.
