Rangers Fold Like Lawn Chair, Hand Canes Win
The new look New York Rangers openned their season with against a highly reworked and highly touted Carolina squad.
The Rangers showed the offensive flair that they showed in preseason in the first two periods which ended with the Rangers up 3-1. The boys from the Big Apple then put in an abysmal third in which they were outscored 3-0. The boys in blue couldn't even register a shot on net - even on the powerplay - and left the ice to a chorus of boos.
"I don't know what happened in the third," said Wade Redden after the game. "It looks like we thought we had it won and could cruise to victory. You have to respect a team like the Canes if you want to win."
"It was a really sad effort in the third," said a clearly distressed coach Neilson. "We'll be adjusting some of the lines for next game."
Daniel Alfredsson Sergei Fedorov and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Rangers while Briere, Bradley, Friesen, and Draper replied for the Canes.
