CANES GET CAUGHT UP IN GONG SHOW
Carolina
A seemingly easy victory in front of them, yet the Carolina Hurricanes decided that rather than play the Flyers with skill and ability, they would rather get caught up in the physical antics and fight fire with fire.
Case and point.
Brendan Shanahan, veteran leader of the Canes, steps on the ice to start off the game and 26 seconds later, finds Mike Ricci and head butts him for a 5 minute major.
"Normally I would say I was guilty here," said Shanahan, "but in my defense, I simply looked up at the time and then looked down and I knew Ricci was about 10 feet away, but when I looked down, the top of my helmet hit his nose. It was an honest mistake, his nose covers more ground than Chara on most nights."
After that, the Canes continued to get into a hitting fest with the lowly Flyers, as most members of each club were responsible for at least 1 hit.
The Canes were led offensively by defensive defenseman Jay McKee, who tallied two assists in the 3-2 win. Robert Gherson, the talented second year netminder, held the fort stopping 23 of 25 shots, including shutting out the Flyers on 7 power play chances. Much of the credit goes to Kris Draper and Shane Doan for their excellent work up front, containing the Flyers young guns throughout the contest.
Peter Polcik, a former project of the Carolina Hurricanes, had a little bit of revenge by notching the Flyers only two goals of the game. Jamie Lundmark, another former Cane, also added an assist.
Of note, the Canes lost Mike Fisher with a bruised foot mid way through the second. X-rays revealed no fracture but the deep bruise will leave Fisher out of the lineup for a couple days.
The Canes get a rest tomorrow before having to face Joe Thornton and the Nashville Predators on Saturday. The victory has now brought the Canes above 500 for the first time this season. Expect Martin Brodeur to return to the nets for the Preds/Canes clash.
