Devils Outscore Capitals

Todd Warriner scored a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough for the Washington Capitals on Day 6 as the New Jersey Devils earned a wild 6-4 victory. Washington falls to 1-2 for the season with the loss.

New Jersey came out flying in the opening period and scored three goals in the first 15:29. Legwand got the first from Volchenkov at 8:03, before Huselius made it 2-0 from Souray and Marchant at 12:33. Clymer extended the lead to three goals just under three minutes later when he converted from Spiller and Blake at 15:29. The Capitals finally put one on the board on Peter Tenkrat's first of the season from Andrew Ference and Greg Watson at 16:51.

Washington pulled within one goal early in the middle stanza on a power play tally from Oleg Saprykin. Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo earned the assists. The Devils bounced back to take a 5-2 lead with a pair of goals just 1:12 apart. Dvorak got the first from Marchant and Volchenkov at 8:06, and Blake notched his third of the season from Biron and Malone at 9:12.

Trailing by three goals, Warriner turned it on in the final 20 minutes with two goals in a 3:32 span. The first came from David Vyborny and Dan Boyle at 6:51, and the second from Mark Eaton and Frantisek Lukes on the power play at 10:23. The Caps continued to press for the tying goal, but Dvorak put it away for New Jersey with an unassisted marker at 18:44.

Manny Legace made 17 saves in the loss and fell to 1-2. Kevin Weekes stopped 10 shots in relief. Nikolai Khabibulin made 24 saves to earn the win for the Devils.

The Capitals visit Atlanta on Day 7.
