Capitals Slashed by Sabres
Patrick Marleau scored a goal and assisted on another, but it wasn't enough for the Washington Capitals on Day 87. The Buffalo Sabres earned a 3-2 victory on home ice to drop Washington to 19-25-4.
Todd Warriner put the Caps ahead early in the first period. Marleau setup the goal on the power play at 2:28. Sykora tied it up for Buffalo just over six minutes later on an assist from Hlavac.
The Sabres took control of the game in the middle stanza with a pair of goals. Kovalchuk got the first from Spezza and Berard at 5:13, before Hagos scored an unassisted goal at 16:57.
Marleau pulled Washington within one with a goal from Mark Eaton and Cory Sarich at 4:23, but that was all the Caps could muster.
Kevin Weekes stopped 21 shots in the loss and fell to 5-10. Rick Dipietro made 24 saves to earn the win.
The Capitals are back in action in Chicago on Day 88.
