Capitals Acquire Talented Pair

The Washington Capitals acquired a pair of young and talented forwards recently in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. Heading to Washington are center Greg Watson and left win Ivan Rachunek. On his way to Detroit is Jamie Langenbrunner.

Watson, 23, is a rare combination of speed, strength, and intensity. He flies down the ice and then can deliver the big check. He's also a strong passer and should have every chance to crack the top two lines at center. In 64 games with the Red Wings last season he scored 10 goals and added 38 assists. He also dished out 127 hits. In the playoffs he was even more impressive as he led the team in goals, 6, and points, 12, in Detroit's 12 playoff games. He also made 29 hits in those games.

Rachunek, 24, is a great skating winger with good speed, intensity, and strength. He's also an accomplished passer and plays well in the offensive end. Rachunek did not play last season.

Losing Jamie Langenbrunner is tough for the team, but the Capitals must concentrate on the rebuilding job at hand. Acquiring two talented young forwards gives the team greater depth and a brighter future. The organization wishes Jamie well in all his future endeavors.
