CANES DOUSE FLAMES, EXPLODE FOR 6

Carolina

In a game of seemingly little significance, the Carolina Hurricanes went to Calgary in order to take on the Flames. In a non conference game, the Canes hoped to begin a new streak and win their second in a row.

"We wanted to really show that our streak wasn't a fluke," said captain Shane Doan. "We can score goals, it has been seen all year, but lately we have struggled in that area. Tonight was a statement game for us I think."

Doan, who notched his 11th of the season as well as adding an assist, was +3 in the contest and helped set the tone physically as he also led the team in hits. Regarded lately as a defensive specialist for his contributions on the third line with fellow Canadian Olympian Kris Draper, the talented forward has stepped up recently during the Canes offensive struggles.

"He leads by example," said defenseman Jay McKee, who also had 2 points in the contest. "You know what you will get from him every game and that is a lot of sand paper and not much glitter. He is a great motivational guy and when the chips are down, it is usually him or the Fish that get the ball rolling."

With his points in the contest, Doan now has 11 goals and 11 assists and is also sitting at +11. Those numbers are good enough to put him 7th on the team in scoring.

"Maybe I should change my number," laughed Doan.

The Canes next contest is against the Columbus Blue Jackets, fresh off a victory with the Buffalo Sabres. The Jackets have two talented forwards in David Vyborny and Christian Berglund to contend with. It is quite likely that Doan and Draper will again get the call, but it would not be a shock to see the line of Wellwood, Friesen and Tucker try their hand at the defensive side of things, especially the way Doan has been responding to added offensive time.

"I take whatever I can get," said Doan. "They want me to score, I will. They want me to ht, I will. They want me to shut down someone, I will. It is all part of the game and as long as I am playing, I won't complain."
