Capitals Rout Rangers
The Washington Capitals extended its unbeaten run to four games on Day 111 in a 5-0 victory over the New York Rangers. With the victory Washingotn moves to 20-26-9.
After two scoreless periods that saw New York outshoot Washington 22-9, the game turned early in the final period.
The Rangers' Kloucek went to the box for a highsticking major at 0:51, and Washington capitalized with a pair of power play tallies just 11 seconds apart. Ivan Rachunek scored the first from Dan Boyle and Anson Carter at 3:35, before Carter scored one of his own from Rachuneck and Cory Sarich at 3:46. Another power play less than seven minutes later gave the Caps the chance to go up 3-0, and the team took advantage. Zigmund Palffy was the scorer from Carter at 10:54, and Washington was in complete control. Just one minute later Jonathan Cheechoo made it 4-0 when he scored from Greg Watson and Michal Rozsival. Todd Warriner added the final goal from Cheechoo and Rozsival at 16:05. The Capitals outshot New York 16-4 in the final 20 minutes.
Manny Legace stopped all 26 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season. Mike Dunham made just 18 saves in the loss for New York. Jocelyn Thibault stopped two shots in relief.
The Capitals return to action on Day 114 against the Carolina Hurricanes.
