JUNIOR CANES NEED BLUELINE HERO, ENTER WEBER

Carolina

The preseason can often lead to a big regular season. That is the hope for top prospect Shea Weber.

With 9 assists and 11 points, Weber was tied for the lead in both categories, an accomplishment which he recognizes doesn't mean a whole lot, but the confidence of the achievement could lead to a big season.

"I do not want to think about the points that much," said Weber, "but rather just keep going out and producing. I am not one of the guys that loves the stat sheets at the end of the game. I know if I played well or not, regardless of what the score sheet says. My first responsibility is always in my own end. After that, anything I get is a bonus."

Weber is now in his 3rd full season as a defenseman in the CLUTCH league. His potential has always been recognized but this season is a truly important one for the young defender.

Last season, Weber's long time defense partner Dion Phaneuf was called up to the Carolina Hurricanes pro squad. Dion and Shea have not only platooned the Canes blueline, they also won a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in 2004 as the club’s top tandem.

"Seeing Dion go to the show this year is a real eye opener for me," said Weber. "He definitely deserves anything he gets because he is a rock but at the same time, there is this feeling like I need to get there as well. I need to prove I belong up there with him and that is my focus right now."

After this preseason, it would appear he is well on his way.
