Capitals Crushed by Avalanche
The Washington Capitals went without a win for the fifth straight game on Day 94, going down 6-2 to the Colorado Avalanche in the Mile High City. The loss dropped Washington to 19-28-5.
Colorado took the lead in the first period when former Capital Renberg scored from Svatos and Kasparaitis at 9:35.
The Avalanche took complete control with three goals in a 4:15 stretch in the second period. Kobesaw netted first from Tanabe and Bergeron at 7:09, before he scored again from Renberg and Liles on the power play at 9:49. Bergeron made it 4-0 with another power play tally from Forsberg and Markov at 11:24. Patrick Marleau finally got the Caps on the board when he netted from Dan Boyle and Jonathan Cheechoo at 14:32, but the Avs regained its four-goal edge on Bergeron's 19th of the season from Kobesaw and Liles at 16:01.
Colorado continued to pour it on early in the final period. Renberg was the scorer again from Armstrong and Liles at 4:40. Cheechoo added a power play marker for Washington from Marleau and Todd Warriner at 13:53 to complete the scoring.
JS Giguere stopped just 17 shots in the loss. Kevin Weekes made nine saves in relief. Mikka Kiprusoff stopped 23 shots to earn the win.
The Capitals visit Philadelphia on Day 96.
