Goaltending In NY Questionable
The goaltending situation in Manhattan was shakey for most of the year last year and the Rangers failed to land another goaltender this off season. When queried about the state of affairs in net GM Burns explained his strategy.
"Look I'm not one to make excuses, but consider the situation when I got here. We were going to lose 13 juniors, had only two draft picks, 1.2 million dollars in the bank, had superstars to resign in pro, were weak at centre, right wing, defence and we didn't have the luxury of a Luongo or Brodeur in net. We had tough decisions to make. We have 12 million in the bank now. We gained a draft pick. We now have a bonifde #1 centre in Ribeiro who will lead this team for years. Our young stars are developing well. We took specific steps to improve our defence by getting Spiller under contract and by bringing in a stay at home guy in Lukowich. Our team is better.
I have a lot of faith in Mike Dunham. With an improved defence in front of him he should see less shots and his numbers should improve. Lehtonen will be taking over in the near future but until he does he's a capable back up. Lehtonen is only 22 and will be our number 1 in a year or two.
We've been hard at work improving the team."
When asked if any players were available Burns thought about it and replied, "Tyutin and Lehtonen are great young players but if genuine older superstar players were availble we'd consider them due to the youth of our team."
