CANES ACQUIRE SPEEDY WINGER
CAROLINA
In a quick small move, literally, the Carolina Hurricanes have acquired the services of diminutive forward Brian Gionta from the Phoenix Coyotes, along with a fifth round draft choice in a deal that sent veteran free agent to be Pascal Rheume and grinder Krys Barch to the desert.
Gionta, a 5 foot 7 inch speedster, will bring a high, uptempo game to the Canes squad and will likely compliment Jeff Friesen as two of the fastest players in the league.
“We love the kid’s tenaciousness and his ability to compete,” said head coach Joel Quenneville. “I think Brian has the upside to be a good player in this league, put up some points here and there and keep other teams off balance a bit. I have always liked speed and in this little warrior, we got one of the fastest.”
In Rheume, the Canes have lost arguably their second best defensive center and a slick playmaker. Rheume, who is set to be a free agent this spring, will likely leave a hole in the middle.
Barch was an aggressive rookie winger who had struggled to find a spot in the Carolina lineup. With left wingers Jeff Friesen, Mike Fisher, Gordie Dwyer and Jay Pandolfo hogging all the ice time, Barch had asked management to see if there was a spot for him elsewhere.
“I told him that if we could find a spot for him, we would make that offer to send him,” said Quenneville. “Phoenix was interested and we granted Krys his wish.”
The Hurricanes are said to be involved in a few trade discussions recently. Most notably the name of Cory Stillman has come up from several sources from various teams. Also mentioned was goaltender Jose Theodore. When asked to comment, Quenneville said that hockey is a business.
