Washington Capitals Add Defensive Help

The Washington Capitals added defender Mark Eaton to the squad in a recent trade with the Nashville Predators. Also moving to Washington is a third round pick in the Yr. 2011 draft. Heading to Nashville is experienced backup netminder Tommy Salo.

Eaton, 28, is a sturdy defender who is good in his own end. He also has solid passing and puck control skills. The 6'2" 190 pounder has ok speed and decent strength, and he's able to contribute offensively when needed. Last season with the Predators, Mark had five goals and 21 assists in 67 games. He should slot in the top six with possible time in the top four on the Capitals' blue line.

Salo, 34, is the Super Swedish Stopper, but he was also the backup to legendary Manny Legace in Washington. At $4,800,000 per year, however, Salo is vastly overpaid to sit on the bench and open the door. "Honestly, I'm amazed anyone came in with an offer for Tommy. To get Eaton plus a future pick is a huge bonus. We get a player we can use, a pick for the future, and salary relief. I'm thrilled," GM John Henry said in an afternoon press conference.

Are there more trades in the future for Washington? Stay tuned to find out.
