CARTER CENTER OF ATTENTION AS KIDDY CANES BEAT BABY LEAFS

CAROLINA

The big center of Carolina's junior squad made his presence felt as the slender pivot potted 4 points. Slick playmaking defenceman Tomas Mojzis added 3 assists in the win as the Canes took down the Leafs 6-5.

"Carts had a game like this coming," said head coach Craig Harstburg. "The kid competes as hard as anyone and he has really made some strides in the offseason to improve his upper body. I think we needed his line to get going. It was solid in pre-season but it's time to get serious now."

The junior Canes have had strong representation from their blueliners so far this season. Tomas Mojzis has a goal and five assists while Shea Weber has a goal and 4 assists. Both players have played 5 games so far.

"We didn't really know what to expect this season from our defense. We added Brayden Coburn, who is more of the rock like defender than an offensively gifted one, but having him has given the red light to Shea. I think playing with Coburn has made Weber a better player."

The Canes are hoping for more offense from their forwards. The overall feeling in Carolina is that big winger Ryan Getzlaf has not put up the numbers needed and is on Hartsbug's dog house.

"I don’t hide it from him and I won't hide it from the fans. We need Ryan to step it up and if he doesn't, I'll insert someone in the lineup who will."
