Junior Capitals Drop Another Close One
Patrick O'Sullivan scored a goal and added an assist for Washington, but it wasn't enough as the Junior Capitals dropped another close game to the Carolina Junior Hurricanes on Day 6. Ivan Baranka also played well for the Capitals with two assists. Washington is now 1-4-0 for the season.
Carolina got off to a quick start in the first period, and Peters gave the 'Canes a 1-0 lead when he scored his third of the season from McLeod and Weber at 1:53. Washington's Jean-Claude Sawyer then took a bad charging major at 3:39, but the Capitals were able to kill off the long power play. The opening period also saw Lance Moynch and Phaneuf drop the gloves and fight to a draw. Carolina's Phaneuf was later ejected after a vicious checking-from-behind major and game misconduct at 9:55.
Washington got thing level in the second period after Karlsson went to the box for elbowing. Mikhail Kuleshov took advantage and scored his second of the season on the man advantage from O'Sullivan and Baranka at 7:39. The Capitals then made it 2-1 just 1:09 later when Cory Urquhart netted from Brett Carson and Lance Moynch. A series of penalties then squashed Washington's momentum as Fabien Laniel and Siarhei Kolasau took minor penalties before another fight brought the crowd to its feet. This time it was Moynch taking on McGrattan and another draw was the result. The fans witnessed their third fight of the game just 36 seconds after Moynch and McGrattan dropped the gloves when Laniel squared off with Karlsson. It wasn't pretty for Laniel, however, as Karlsson beat him to a pulp. After the fights, Carolina got back on the scoreboard through Tambellini from Laine and Reid at 15:37 to make it 2-2.
Carolina regained the lead early in the third period when Mozyakin scored from Carter and Mojsiz at 1:34, but Washington came back just 48 seconds later to make it 3-3. O'Sullivan was the scorer for the Capitals from Baranka and Peter Pohl. Washington had a chance to take the lead with the mad advantage when Weber went to the box midway through the frame, but the team couldn't convert. Unfortunately for the Capitals, Carolina rallied after the big stop to score the game-winner at 13:32. Tambellini got the goa, his second of the game, from Laine and Mojzis.
Brad Topping stopped 26 shots in the loss. Rob Zepp had 22 saves to improve to 1-2-0 for Carolina.
The Junior Capitals are off until Day 10 when they visit the Vancouver Canucks.
