Islanders/Bolts Resume Rivalry – Solve Nothing
In their first game against the Lightning since Tampa knocked them out of the playoffs, the Islanders were looking to extract some revenge against the defending champions. The Bolts got the early jump, as Kyle Calder got his 1st of the year just over 2 minutes in. With Daniel Sedin in the box for goalie interference, Calder scored a powerplay goal when he redirected a Pavel Kubina pointshot to make it 1-0 TB.
The early deficit seemed to focus the Islanders, as they began to pepper Tampa’s Jocelyn Thibault with shots. At the twelve minute mark, Marian Hossa got his 1st of the yr to tie the game. Four minutes later Patrick Poulin scored for the Isle, putting the Islanders ahead 2-1. The Islanders’ celebration was short-lived however, when Daniel Cleary tied it at 2-2 just 20 seconds later. After 20 minutes, the shots were 16-6 in favour of Long Island, but the game was knotted at 2.
The first two minutes of the second period saw Cleary scored again for Tampa, followed by Denis Arkhipov for the Isles to make it 3-3. The Bolts were then swarming the Islander’s David Aebischer, looking for the goal that would put them ahead. Yet halfway through the period, Tampa instead received a major blow, as Mario Lemieux left the ice buckled over in pain, and did not return to the game.
From that point on, Tampa absolutely owned the Islanders, firing 25 shots in the final 2 period and OT, while New York could only manage 12 in that same time. Yet David Aebischer slammed the door repeatedly, refusing to yield another goal, and the game finished 3-3.
