Junior Capitals Win First of Season

Lance Moynch, Cory Urquhart, and Peter Pohl all scored goals to lead the Washington Junior Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Junior Oilers on Day 4. The win moves Washington to 1-2-0.

The Capitals came out quickly in the first period, but despite having two power plays the boys in blue were not able to get on the board. Finally, with just 1:33 to go, Moynch scored the opener from Patrick O'Sullivan and Zbynek Novak.

Neither team managed to score in a sluggish second period, but there were a number of penalties. Both teams killed off three power plays while combining for just 11 shots in the 20 minutes.

With a slim 1-0 lead entering the final period, the Capitals came out jumping and made it 2-0 early in the action. With Norrie in the box for boarding, Urquhart converted from Mikhail Kuleshov and Branko Radivojevic at 4:38. Edmonton needed something to turn the tide, and McConnell tried by challenging Fabien Laniel to a fight. The pair squared off, but a draw was the final result. The Oilers were able to turn the new energy into a goal at 16:11 when Hogeboom scored from McConnell and Baum, but another fight O'Sullivan and Norrie gave the Capitals some new enthusiasm. Pohl then killed the game off with a goal from Matthew Hansen and Andrew Joudrey with just eight seconds remaining.

Brad Topping stopped 21 shots to pickup the victory. Dave Leneveu had 24 saves in the loss for Edmonton.
