CANES EMBARRASS THEMSELVES, LOSE 8-3
CAROLINA
With a game that can only be described as an embarrassment, the Carolina Hurricanes are off today and doing what most expected, they are practicing.
"I looked up at the scoreboard last night and I honestly was shocked," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "The first thought in my head was, wow, we played this bad and only lost by 5?"
The Hurricanes came out flat and were down 5 to 1 after the first period. Theodore was pulled and rookie netminder Robert Gherson took the reigns.
"I wanted to get someone else in there. I don't blame Theo for tonight's loss because our team was so bad, I am honestly thinking of calling up the junior team to try and teach them how to play in their own end."
In the second period, the Canes tried to make it interesting. After a first shift wasted on the power play, coach Quenneville threw rugged tough guy Scott Parker out for the second shift. Parker, not known for his finesse, stole a puck off of a clearing attempt and turned and fired the puck past Roberto Luongo. The goal was Parker’s first of the season and made the game 5-2.
"I was sitting on the bench and watching the skill guys chasing the puck in their own zone and coach tapped me on the head and said get out there sheriff," said Parker. "I thought he tapped the wrong guy but whatever. I'll take a shift any time I can get one."
The Sheriff of Parkingham has made himself a fan favourite by his pugilistic ways. The big tough guy now has a reputation as one of the league’s top heavies and has been more than willing to stir the pot when needed.
"I guess that when things need to be said, I can be the diplomat. I don't really care who I am up against, eventually they all have to get a talking to."
In the third, the Hurricanes inched one more closer as Alexei Kovalev buried his third off of a one time feed from Mike Fisher. For Kovalev's line, it was a relief as the trio had been buzzing all game without anything to show for it. The momentum, however, did not last as Florida stormed back with a trio of goals themselves, including two more from the Weiss, Dagenais and Novoseltsev line.
"We had no answer for them," said captain Shane Doan. "The guys just didn't really get anything going and this is what we have to show for it. All we can do is take our gear, head to the rink tomorrow and work out the kinks. I think everyone here agrees, we cannot play like this every game."
