CANES SEND TWO MAIN PIECES TO BACK TO BACK CAMPS

Carolina

When the week began, the Carolina Hurricanes Junior squad was currently in a slump of sorts. The team had been struggling to score goals and struggling far worse to keep pucks out of their own net. One of the team's leaders offensively, the big power forward Ryan Getzlaf, was then set to depart for a two week stint, and the timing couldn't be worse.

"Ryan is crucial to our team's success," said head coach Craig Hartsburg. "He plays the game as hard as anyone. He throws checks, he grinds down low and does the dirty work. He is also a pretty creative offensive players and the hope is these camps will help him overall, but for now, losing him will sting."

Getzlaf, 20, is part of the big youth movement in Carolina. Generally found on Jeff Carters right wing, Getzlaf is a goal scorer with a knack for sniping goals. His 13 goals is good enough to be third on the Canes, 1 behind Jeff Tambellini and 5 behind league leader Junior Lessard.

Also off to two weeks of camp is Canes center Colin Fraser. The speedster has been lighting up AAA this season and the camps hope to help get young Fraser a foot in the door for next season.

"Colin is one of the best pure passers I have seen in a long time," said Hartsburg. "His incredible high end speed makes him ideal for the next level and his on ice vision is second to no one. I think he'll eventually end up on a top line in the CLUTCH but for now we have taken it really slow with him. Our current pro centers are deep and because of that, it gives him more time to refine his game."

Fraser has often been looked at as the future second line center behind Jeff Carter. With Mike Richards, Nigel Dawes and Anthony Stewart currently being slotted at the future checking line, Fraser seems to be set up to play with gritty two way forwards Jeremy Colliton and Stephen Dixon. Time will tell, of course, but the overall scheme of things seems to point this way.

"I got to play with Steph and Jeremy a lot this season and we seem to click," said Fraser. "All three of us are going to be late campers and I think we all hope to be playing a major role on the top junior team next year, especially with graduation. Eventually we'll get up there but for now, we are just going to keep working hard and wait for our turn."
