CANES THROW DOWN JACKETS
Carolina
On a busy Friday night in Columbus, the Hurricanes swept into town for another cross conference showdown with the Blue Jackets. The result was the same. The Canes took the Jackets by a score of 4-3 and the team continues to maintain control of the second spot in their own conference.
The Hurricanes received multiple point games from veterans Cory Stillman and Jay McKee and a late gift with less than 4 minutes left in the game by Jeff Woywitka, who scored the winner and his second of the season.
Jose Theodore was at his normal, stellar self, turning away 24 of 27 shots and kept the Canes in it while the visiting squad picked up countless, unnecessary penalties.
"Playing this way is not going to help us much," said Joel Quenneville. "These guys need to pay the piper every game and stop being so selfish. Most of our calls are just dumb plays and we need to cut that out. It can work against Columbus, but it sure as hell won't work elsewhere."
Of note, Kris Draper, the talented two way forward, notched a short handed goal while killing one of the unnecessary penalties in the first period, a high sticking major to Steve Eminger, who clipped Jeff Halpern in a race for the puck.
"Drapes got the goal, but in reality, we should have never been in that short handed spot in the first place," said captain Shane Doan. "That was a dummy play and we need to shake it off and move on."
The Hurricanes will battle the Colorado Avalanche in Colorado Saturday night. The team still seems well rested and there are no major injury of note. The Canes will see newcomers Jason Crain, Matt Bradley and Mattias Ohlund make their debut in that contest as Scott Parker and Derek Meech will sit, both of whom took unwanted penalties in the Columbus game.
