Capitals Conquer Canadiens

Zigmund Palffy scored a goal and assisted on another while Rob Blake and Peter Tenkrat had two assists each to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Day 91. The win, Washington's third on home ice this season, improved the team to 16-23-5.

Montreal came out quickly in the first period and held a 2-0 lead after just 7:12. Stuart scored first from Skoula and Bulis at 4:01, and Samsonov netted his 18th of the season from Briere and Skoula to extend the lead. Greg Watson finally got things going for the Capitals 49 seconds later when he scored form Peter Tenkrat to make it a one goal game. Patrick Marleau then tied the game when he scored from Frantisek Lukes and Radoslav Suchy at 12:00.

Washington continued to surge offensively in the second period, and Palffy's goal from Blake and Tenkrat at 12:58 gave the team its first lead of the content. Anson Carter then made it 4-2 when he scored from Palffy and Blake at 17:52. Neither team would score in the final period as the Capitals skated to victory in front of the home crowd.

Manny Legace stopped 29 shots to earn the win and first star honors. Martin Brodeur made 19 saves for Montreal.

The Capitals return to the ice on Day 93 against Minnesota.
