JUNIOR CANES CLAIM VICTORY
Carolina
With rugged right winger Ryan Getzlaf currently at camp, and preparing for his second in as many weeks, the junior Canes took on the Washington Capitals squad and snuck by with an overtime win and their third win in a row. What this means is the Canes have finally made a bit of a movement up in the standings, a spot where many predicted they would be from the get go.
"A lot of pressure was on us to start making some noise," said captain Brandon Reid. "We get a bit tired of hearing how we are hyped to win everything all the time and personally, I think a lot of that pre season hype was undeserved. This is the same team that got slapped out of the playoffs first round and we have not done anything to warrant anyone expecting more."
The Canes and the Captials traded goals all the way through the game as the Canes took an early lead, only to have it replied to a minute later. The Canes again took the lead in the second but once again the Capitals responded quickly, this time three minutes later.
On a fluke play Jeff Tambellini, the slick left winger find space at a ridiculous angle and roofed a goal past former Brampton Battalion netminder Brad Topping. The Canes went into the second intermission with a 1 goal lead.
That lead held up a mere 3 minutes again in the third as Branko Radivojevic beat Konstantin Barulin five hole to tie up the game. The two squads battled it out until the end of regular play.
"We need a goal and in times like these, a team has to look to their veterans," said defenseman Shea Weber.
Teemu Laine, the 25 year old import, wasted no time at all, receiving a pass from David Cornacchia, the talented Finn went in one on one with Topping and buried his 6th of the year and the Canes claimed victory.
"It was a must win game for us," said Laine. "I wanted to make something happen and asked coach to put me on. He did and I made him a happy guy."
Te Canes now sit third in the conference and have been playing some excellent hockey as of late. The Atlanta Junior Thrashers are in town tonight in what could be quite a battle.
Of note, Nigel Dawes was hurt in the contest and will not be playing tonight as he is being re-evaluated. Look for him to miss a couple games at the most.
