ROAD WARRIORS OF CAROLINA STOP AVALANCHE
Carolina
After a couple trades, the Hurricanes took their new look team to Denver on Saturday. With a surging Avalanche squad seemingly ready for the Hurricanes, the two teams got in on in a memorable battle.
The Canes scored first off of a tip in goal by Tim Brent off of a point shot from newly acquired Jason Crain. For Brent, it marked his 5th of the season. Marian Cisar also assisted on the goal.
The Hurricanes added to their lead in the second when speedy Jeff Friesen increased his team leading goal count to 25 after a top corner blast on Avs netminder Manny Fernendez. Darcy Tucker and Jeff Woywitka picked up a point each on the goal.
"We had the start we wanted and our fourth line was really digging out there," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "They played well and I wanted them to keep up the good work, and they did."
The Avs, however, came back and pulled themselves within one. The Canes would not let that happen however as sniper Marian Cisar picked up his second point of the game and his 10th goal of the season to restore the Canes 2 goal lead.
The Avs fired back with their own goal, but they could not muster the power to bury another as the Canes won 3-2.
Matt Bradley and Mattias Ohlund both played well, however, ended the game as a -1 each. Crain, who played primarily with the 4th line, had an assists and was even in the contest.
"The game went well," said captain Shane Doan. "We battled hard for the full 60 minutes and I think we gave the Avs all they could handle. Overall, it was a success."
The Canes fly home today and await the Nashville Predators tomorrow. Last time the duo battled to a tie.
