Junior Capitals Ground Junior Flyers
The Washington Junior Capitals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back on Day 154 in a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Junior Flyers. The win moved Washington to 31-34-12 and six points out of the final playoff spot in the Wales Conference.
The Capitals came out flying in the first period, and Cory Urquhart got things started when he scored from Sean Bergenheim and Henrik Tallinder at 9:27. Bergenheim extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal from Ivan Baranka and Tallinder at 14:04, before Igor Shadulov made it 3-0 at 15:31 from Zbynek Novak and Branko Radivojevic.
After a scoreless second period that saw Philadelphia outshoot Washington 12-3, the Caps bounced back early in the final 20 minutes to go four goals ahead. Novak was the scorer from Shadulov and Radivojevic at 1:39. The Flyers finally got on the board with Nolan's marker from Sullivan at 4:44, but Washington came right back with a goal from Joudrey. Mikhail Kuleshov assisted on the goal at 6:12. Philadelphia added two goals in the second half of the period to complete the scoring. Jessiman got the first from Beauchemin and Picard at 12:37, before Sullivan tallied from Picard and Jessiman at 15:10.
Robert Muller made 22 saves to earn the win and improve to 6-1-3. Martin Gerber stopped just 13 shots in the loss and fell to 32-25-6. Bernd Bruckner made seven saves in relief.
The Junior Capitals return to action on Day 157 against the Junior Islanders.
