CANES AWAIT PLAYOFF SCENARIO FOR PICK LOCATION
Carolina
While the playoffs loom and teams jockey for position, the Carolina Hurricanes are watching intently for another reason. The club owns 7 first round draft selection this season and the new look draft is set up so that non playoff teams get a shot at the first overall pick, a pick that this year looks to be stellar Russian center Evgeni Malkin.
The Ottawa Senators pick, which is a lock at the 4th slot in the lottery, is the most important pick at the moment. The pick was acquired in an offseason deal which also brought in two juniors, Brian Boyle and Mike Egener, for fan favourite and one of last year's top scoring forwards Brendan Morrison. Morrison, a speedster who had an impressive season alongside fellow speedster Jeff Friesen, was shocked to have been dealt after such a productive year.
The Canes are also waiting for the smoke to clear as 4 picks could possibly find their way out of the playoffs. The Vancouver Canucks pick, acquired in a scrutinized deal for Alexei Kovalev, currently sits 3 points out of a playoff spot. Vancouver looked to be loading up this season, but chemistry issues or a quality netminder might have been their eventual demise.
The New Jersey Devils and the Tampa Bay Lightning are also jockeying for the final playoff spot in the Wales. Tampa Bay, who's pick was snagged during the Eric Daze deal of last season, has made huge strides in their late season push by hammering the lowly Thrashers 3 games in a row. Carolina could ultimately end their run with a win tomorrow. The Devils, on the other hand, dealt for speedy two way winger Marco Sturm last year and the Canes in turn acquired both last season and this seasons first rounders from the New Jersey Club. The Devils, while loaded with veterans, seem to be struggling to pull out that victory to keep them in the race.
The final squad in the hunt are the Los Angeles Kings, a team who many simply assumed were in. A slump at the end, however, and the Kings are right at the brink of disaster. The Kings pick was acquired in the Miuchael Woodford deal, which sent the aforementioned Boyle along with young sniper Michael Woodford for the pick, Jason Crain and power forward Matt Bradley.
So for now, the Canes will sit back and wait for their picks to surface. At the moment, however, everything looks peachy on the coast.
