CANES FIND STUD IN SECOND ROUND

Carolina

The second round came early for the Canes and they wasted no time picking their man.

"We had our eye on him in the first round but we took a chance that others had not seen his potential," said Carolina’s head scout Barry Trapp. "Dustin had all the assets we were looking for. He works hard, he cares about his defensive responsibility, he has a knack for finishing and he was a determined forechecker."

The Carolina Hurricanes selected, from the University of Maine, Dustin Penner. At 6'4, 240 pounds, the power forward possesses that unusual combination of size, grit, skill and determination.

"This team is built off of two way players who do not take nights off," said Trapp. "Adding a player who can slide right in their and give us an imposing body in front of the net was just too much not to consider."

By adding Penner, the Canes have really managed to lock themselves in with a lot of strong forwards who have an ability to compete, game in and game out.

"We want our club to show up every night," said head coach Craig Hartsburg. "I will not accept a lack of commitment to playing 60 minutes. Penner fits that mould. I think right now, with a few of the latest draftees, some of our returning players better show up prepared to work harder than they did last season."

The Canes training camp opens in 1 week.
