Leafs end first round of the draft, somewhat satisfied

Leaf's scouts scramble as strategy changes

The Toronto Maple Leafs finished up the first round of the Entry draft, with 2 selections, 27th and 30th overall. With the mishandling and arguable underbidding for MAF, then missing out on aquiring a top young goalie like Pogge and Montoya, the Leafs needed to change gears in their draft plans and selected 129th ranked Finnish goalie Pekka Rinne. Yes he was a bit lower than some other players, but he was the best goalie left, and their GM's ineptness in landing a young goalie left them no choice.

The next pick could be looked at as being fortunate, in selecting Mikhail Grabovsky. The talented Russian could have been passed over either due to his age being slightly older, or the fact the draft is deep at Centre. This is an odd pick mainly due to the Leafs depth at centre as well, but sometimes taking the best player, instead of by position, pays off. Consider this balancing out from the previous selection.

With the anticipated glut of JR's, the Leafs have posted a trade block of JR's who could be easily, and for the most part cheaply moved. There has to be a few teams out there who could surely use the JR bodies, without having to spend the cash to sign them just for 1 season.

Up next, 5 picks in the 2nd round, which has already started. Updates coming soon
