CANES DEAL CAPTAIN, ANYONE SURPRISED?

Carolina

The writing was on the wall for team captain Shane Doan. After a near breakdown by head coach Joel Quenneville, Doan had gone to talk to his coach about several key mistakes made by the big power forward. Doan was greeted to a closed door and was not able to discuss his fate with Quenneville. Instead, the talented forward found he was on his way to Detroit.

“I guess that is the way he does things,’ said Doan. “You make a mistake, and that is it. I recognize it has been a tough year but I think I have given everything to this team and then they just discard me. Oh well, I will go to Detroit and do my thing there.”

The Hurricanes dealt Doan, along with a third round draft choice, to Detroit in exchange for the younger, faster Jaroslav Svoboda. Svoboda comes to Carolina and now assumes the title of the teams leading scorer.

“I have been told I will be on a line with Jeff Friesen and Daniel Briere,” said Svoboda when asked what line he will start with tomorrow. “I think we will show a lot of speed and skill and hopefully things work out. I think I can make a difference here.”

The Canes forward lines have had to change over the past couple of days with injuries and fatigues taking their toll. Expect the top line to be the only line that remains the same for the next contest.
