Ivan Rachunek scored a goal and assisted on another, but the Washington Capitals still lost 4-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Day 58. The setback dropped Washington to 11-18-3.

Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals over a 2:42 span in the opening period. Briere started it off from Klesla and Boucher at 4:18. Horcoff followed it up from Iginla and Phaneuf at 5:59, before Friesen extended the lead from Aucoin and Briere at 7:00. Washington finally got on the board when Todd Warriner netted from Frantisek Lukes and Carl Corazzini on the power play at 19:05.

The Capitals pulled within one at 8:24 of the second period. Jonathan Cheecho got the goal from Greg Watson and Rachunek at 8:24. The Hurricanes regained its two-goal edge on Pronger's third of the season from Connolly and Fisher at 18:06.

Washington battled back in the final period to make it a one-goal game, but that was all the visitors could muster. Rachunek was the scorer from Radoslav Suchy and Artem Chubarov at 13:50.

Kevin Weekes made 29 saves in the loss and fell to 4-7. Former Washington netminder Manny Legace stopped 28 shots to earn the win.
