HURRICANES GAINING STRENGTH, WIN THIRD IN A ROW

Carolina

Despite the absence of the club’s top left handed defensemen, the Carolina Hurricanes stormed through the Philadelphia Flyers, at home, and picked up a much needed 5-1 victory.

The Canes power play was once again a factor, notching two more goals from Jaroslav Svoboda and Shawn Horcoff. Horcoff led the contest with his power play and two assists.

Brendan Shanahan had a particularly impressive game, laying out 5 hits, blasting 6 shots and added a goal and an assist. Shanny also beat up Roman Lyashenko, the Flyers wannabe tough guy, and earned himself the number 1 star of the game.

Overall, the Canes were the more physical of the two teams and were relentless on the attack. Carolina laid out 32 hits, 17 more than the Flyers and fired 21 shots on net more as well. The Flyers really seemed unprepared in the contest and the Canes essentially dominated from start to finish.

Of note, both Svoboda and Jarome Iginla extended their goal scoring streaks. Svoboda has now scored at least a goal in the last 4 games, while Iginla has done the same in the past three games. Svoboda has yet to lose a game since his acquisition.

The Canes are off tonight but with an extra day and no travelling, the Canes will sit and wait for the Florida Panthers, who last night peppered the Colorado Avalanche and came away with their own victory. The Panthers will also be rested for the contest. Brad Stuart and Chris Pronger will remain out of action for the game as both are still serving their respective suspensions. Stuart has 2 games remaining while Pronger still has 3.
